Defending Penetrations - Unicaja |
|
HELP: It’s important that the player defending a one-on-one is concentrated, and does not expect help, trying first to resolve the situation successfully without asking for help. This can not always be the case, so other possible help must be organized with clear and specific rules.
It’s key that everybody knows what to do when there is a penetration; it’s just as dangerous and negative to not have any help when necessary, as giving help when it isn’t. Inside Penetration: help on penetrations from the weak side should not be for very long, just to stop or force an offensive foul. Help from the ball side should only be fakes and recoveries.
DEFENSIVE ROTATION ON THE WEAK SIDE: after help, in this case # 1 goes to the outlet pass and #3 will rotate to the player on the free perimeter. #5 always recovers his man.
Penetration towards the baseline: help on penetrations from the weak side should not be for very long, just to stop or force an offensive foul. Help from the ball side should only be fakes and recoveries.
DEFENSIVE ROTATION ON THE WEAK SIDE: after help, in this case # 1 goes to the outlet pass and #3 will rotate to the player on the free perimeter. #5 always recovers his man.
Penetration down the centre. just like the help from the weak side, not too long, and on the ball side just fakes and recovery.
DEFENSIVE ROTATION ON THE WEAK SIDE: after help, in this case # 4 goes to the outlet pass and #3 will rotate to the player on the free perimeter. #5 always recovers his man.
DRILLS: a) two-on-two, + two passers:
1 and 2 open, x1 and x2 defends positions depending on ball’s position. Several passes are made, adjusting the defensive positions and the coach’s orders, when 1 or 2 has the ball, they go to the hoop forcing the reaction of the other defender helping out. Play 2 x 2.
b) Three against three open:
1, 2 and 3 pass the ball quickly, when the coach orders it you must penetrate, with a defensive reaction and 3 against 3. The aim of the drill is to position the defenders, have a man-ball vision, react quickly to help and rotations. c) Four against four “shell” :
Just like with the previous ones, passes, penetration to force help and rotation. d) Five against five with posting down low:
Just like the previous ones, but with a post down low; the help on the post down low with the ball depends on the aims. These drills are performed for 5 to 8 minutes, and the player rotations are always offence to defense, defense rests. |
